Reading women
Hanna Brooks Olsen
This year has been a year of being very aware of my reading and book-buying habits. This isn't a new idea; my friend Lilit read only books by women in 2013. But as a white person who tends to gravitate toward post-modernism, I've found my bookshelf crowded with a lot of dudes.
Interestingly, though, I didn't necessarily mean to only read books by women this year -- just in becoming aware of it, in part because of efforts by writers like Lilit to point it out, I noticed that every time I went to a bookstore, I would look more explicitly for books by women. And then that's just what I would buy. I realized only afterward (like, last week), that I'd read solely women.
Awareness: Literally the easiest thing and somehow it changes everything.
